Moving from Magnetic to True North in aviation Webinar(Coming soon)

The use of Magnetic North in aviation has always posed a challenge for the design and operation of instrument procedures. Modern aircraft, air traffic, and IFR procedure design systems are all built to True North reference. This data then has to be periodically converted into magnetic north for the pilots through magnetic variation (MAGVAR) tables. Air operators, air navigation service providers (ANSPs), airports, and avionics original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) spend millions of dollars annually managing this magnetic variation.

This webinar will look at the impacts of switching from Magnetic North to a True North reference for navigation in aviation. The webinar will begin with a presentation from NAV Canada, which has been leading industry efforts to move away from Magnetic North to True North. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion to try to answer the following questions:  

• Why do we still navigate by reference to Magnetic North in aviation?

• Is the aviation world ready to switch to True North?

• How could  True North be implemented in a harmonized way across ICAO Member States?
